Happy Speak: Assignment 1

I see words as bite-sized bits of food because everybody walks away with a different taste in their mouth after using them. Deciding which words or words you like is a subjective experience. Sometimes certain words leave sweet and tangy impressions that linger. I tend to recycle memorable words like these in my writing because of the images they create in my mind.

Hearing the words “serendipity,” “hope,” and “bunnies” instantly makes me smile.

"Serendipity" is noun which literally means “good fortune.” I love this word for a number of reasons. It’s made up of an interesting number of syllables that just roll off the tongue when you say it. This word also starts with my favorite letter of the alphabet and has a whimsical sound to it when it’s being pronounced. I also enjoy that this term is often used in romantic films to describe couples that are destined to be together.

Furthermore, I find “hope” to be a word that immediately sparks my interest. It seems plain in appearance and small to look at on paper, but its meaning magnifies its true worth. Hope is an absolute. Many concepts can be toppled or made obsolete, but not hope. It simply cannot be completely extinguished because a glimmer of it always remains.

Ultimately, when I hear the word “bunnies,” I immediately think of my childhood and my parents. I was born in the spring and my parents affectionately nicknamed me “Bribunny” as a result. I find that childhood fables and my own culture have created just the idea of bunny rabbits to be one that is very soothing, so that is what comes to mind where I hear that word. I think most others must share my belief because the slang expression “bunnies and rainbows” is meant to express happiness.
